    Renzo Piano Building Workshop

Concepito come due volumi compatti in pietra sospesi su esili colonne in acciaio, l’edificio unisce presenza istituzionale, sostenibilità e leggerezza architettonica.

The architecture is defined by two massive blocks clad in local stone, whose sculpted surfaces filter sunlight while allowing natural light to enter the building. Inside, the same material continuity creates a sober and contemporary environment, where lightness, simplicity, and function replace any form of rhetorical monumentality.

At the heart of the building is the parliamentary chamber, the most representative space of the institution. For this room, UniFor designed and supplied custom desks developed specifically around the geometry of the chamber, translating the architectural layout into a precise and functional furniture system.

The south block houses the offices of the members of parliament, the Prime Minister, and the opposition leaders. The partially above-ground basement level accommodates interpreters’ booths and administrative offices, extending the functional program of the building through a carefully organized sequence of workspaces.

For the offices and meeting rooms, UniFor supplied standard and customized elements from the Naòs System and MDL System collections, together with specially designed pieces. Natural cherry finishes, refined colours, and selected materials define a coherent atmosphere, balancing institutional identity and daily use.

Offices, meeting rooms, and interpreters’ booths are defined by Parete RP partition walls, designed by Renzo Piano and produced by UniFor. The system combines aluminium profiles with a metallised grey finish, extra-clear glass, light grey technical fabric screens, painted metal panels, and sliding or hinged glass doors.

The supply also included custom reception desks and tables for private offices, characterized by metal structures and natural cherry finishes. These elements extend the material language of the parliamentary chamber into the other areas of the building, reinforcing continuity across the interiors.

Throughout the project, UniFor’s contribution supports an idea of institutional space that is rigorous, functional, and contemporary. Technology is integrated in a discreet way, while the furniture and partition systems ensure performance, flexibility, and comfort within one of Malta’s most significant civic buildings.

    OMA
